Other reasons for East to duck the diamond are that South with Kx(x) will get it right anyway, with KJx will probably get it wrong but with QJx as here he now has a ruffing finesse for an extra trick. Trickier at MPs or BAM to be fair.

Just another card combination more fit for Darvas (“Right Through the Pack” author) as the tale of the nine of diamonds.
I certainly agree with you that it will usually be much trickier at MPs or BAM than Rubber or IMPs.
