Hi Bobby,

On BWTA, suppose it goes P, P double (of 1S) from partner? Do you leave it in, perhaps dependent on form of scoring and vulnerability or bid 2H?

regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

While at the higher levels I tend to be aggressive in all aspects of bidding close games and slams, as well as taking positive positions with bidding on, instead of holding back with competitive decisions as well as, when faced with a close choice of leading aggressively or passively to choose the former, but with turning low level TO doubles into penalty, I tend to be conservative, especially when playing against good declarers.

Furthermore, I have not kept score as to my overall results from any of the above, but I never liked the position of having to take so many tricks to get a good result from low level bidding choices, since it is much more difficult to defend perfectly than to play the dummy (beginning with the opening lead), simply because the defense is not privy to looking at all 26 assets, but instead is restricted to only 13.

Therefore, I am a 2 heart bidder now, awaiting further spade bidding by those same very good opponents. Also and hopefully, my partner’s then felt more confident when I did choose defense, when he expected offense, since TO doubles are just that.

Finally, yes scoring and vulnerability is important but so is, who is going to be declarer,
as well as during the 3rd round of bidding instead of the 2nd, limits those very same opponents from falling into a better fit, since they oft times miss their best fit when they have not been given the opportunity to luckily, fall into it.

Hi Bobby,

I think I’d have to be pretty desperate even at pairs vs. vulnerable opposition to pass 1S X but might at a pinch. 2h seems quite likely to get the oppo competing to 2S though and that’s much nicer.

Iain

Hi Iain,

You always seem to be able to state your case and better than I, in about half the words.

Hi Bobby,

That’s very kind but don’t forget this is the age of the sound bite. I may be concise but that doesn’t mean I’m always accurate and it is always a pleasure to read your wisdom when talking through options.

Regards,

Iain
