Hi Bobby,

Very interesting quote today, but I wonder if West holding (say) 109xx K5 J9xxx xx could have the nerve to ruff in with the 5 on the 3rd round of clubs. Odds against but if declarer then takes the suggested sensible line…..

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Yes, your supposition, as usual, is on target, but in order to make ends meet, one would have to visualize an entirely different EW layout in order to include the heart king with West. Nothing impossible or close, but still a somewhat laborious effort to justify the change.

Call it imagination, or label it a teaching device, both are correct, as long as the reader dabbles in what ifs, instead of cold, hard, relatively specific, other cards,

Hi Bobby, what if South discards the club 7 and J over AK ? I don’t think East dares a third club play ..

Hi Angelo,

Yes indeed, but it should depend on EW’s chosen leads, while holding 3 little in partner’s suit.

We do all know about all bridge player’s rights to differ from accepted agreements, but this one, if West is holding three instead of two, could, (bite my tongue) break up that partnership over such a small (not on this hand) deviation.

BTW, thanks for blogging. Don’t wait for so long before you repeat it. Promise, no one will bite you, with a merciful disagreement the worst reaction.
