Hi Bobby,

what should declarer make of this trump lead? It could be small from 9x, 10x or 109x(x) but it surely won’t be a singleton (potentially picking up partner’s suit) or from K9x, K10x or K109x. As the cards lie, a declarer deciding that West has 109x or 109xx will be able to smile sweetly at West if he plays small from dummy. East may not share such a reaction for some reason.

On BWTA I’d probably agree but, against some pushy players, I might just pass 1H hoping the oppo get into trouble. We all know players who’d bid in 4th seat here and think later…. Double in 4th hearing redouble from partner is always a promising start e.g. if pard has an 18 count with 2-5-4-2, it is open season.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

I agree with strong consideration of playing low from dummy, if and when LHO leads a low spade vs. the 4S contract and for your description.

I also agree with a pass on BWTA, but simply because partner will expect more, plus the miss description of a one spade response. Probably, because I would usually raise one spade to two with only three trump, would be one of the reasons for my original pass. Also, my decision might be different against some players rather than others, all for strategic reasons
rather than ones to be carefully justified (yes, I have always liked and played Flannery, which may or may not enter into what should be bid).

Thanks for your thinking to which all of us on site have respect and fie on the other thousands who disagree. (it probably used to be millions before Covid.
