Hands like south’s are precisely the reason the 1NT range got downgraded from 16-18, to 15+-18, and now to 15-17. I’ve got one partner who takes any 14 pt. hand with a 4=4=3=2 hand, opens it 1NT, accepts any invitation, and is astonished when he goes down.
Then he blames me.

David Bird in “English Bridge ” recently noted how often players upgrade hands but how rarely they downgrade them when they should. He’d sympathise!
