Welcome back, oh bridge column — much preferred to the Doric columns.

Hi Folks,

Apparently several websites fell over at the weekend but nobody told them about this one. Hence an E-Mail to the address I posted last Sunday (18th June) should do it if it happens again.

Hi Steven & Iain,

Steven, while being unfamiliar to the Doric columns, somehow and in someway my tastes are the same as yours.

And to Iain, perhaps your thoughtfulness and industry is the only reason we and the bridge column is granted new life. If so and for so many reasons thanks for the revitalized existence. Happily we continue to exist and consider yourself greatly appreciated. IOW
two straight guffaws with absolutely no mention, the highest honor we can bestow anyone.

Actually, it’s the same guess in each case: Kx in one hand. Playing the Ace first has the advantage that it works no matter which hand has the Kx.

Once again, a weak jump call in a hand with only one honor turns to the advantage of the opponents when they have an iffy game. Try to make this hand on a diamond lead.

Hi Robert,

Yes, I’ve been trying to make this hand all week with a diamond lead, before Iain fixed things,
and more pleasant duties erupted. Then I considered not playing anything but a ducking game and with hearts I tried it, not once but twice.

Not easy, and perhaps not percentage, but leaving me to say “Duck you”. No offense intended, but if one is available let ‘er ride!

Hi Bobby, Robert,

There is a school of thought playing 4 card majors and bidding “up the line” that after 1C 1H 1N or 1D 1S 1N (or higher NT bids) you should lead the suit in between i.e. D and H respectively. Works nicely here. If partner’s spade suit was any good, he should have bid 2S (or at least that’s the logic one of my partners uses at times). He is also very forgiving when I decide not to lead his lousy suit.

regards,

Iain
