Hi Everyone,

CAUTION! We need to be playing in an experienced partnership before we jump raise with the North hand. I can already hear South asking partner “Would you have jumped to 6 hearts if you had the same hand minus the queen of spades?”

Seriously though, these important, but still somewhat foreign bridge logic to players just learning, need to be brought along slowly until they begin to understand the expert game and its apparent, but not to veterans, inconsistencies.
inconsistencies.

Hi Bobby,

This is a very nice play problem, thanks for sharing it.

To me, raising to game with the North hand is a shot in the dark. I’d put the chances of success at below 50% even for a top pair. Do you agree?

For simplicity and to eliminate ambiguity, I like to play that the 2C opening is forcing to game (unless of course opener rebids 2NT).
Too simple? Too risky?

Hi Mircea & Clarksburg,

While I agree with Clarksburg with his GF discussion, I do not doubt that the North hand had
a brief thought to not follow system and prematurely pass out 2 hearts. However, he needs to continue to think positive and resist negative instincts, since perhaps partner had an 11 or even 12 trick hand, but wanted to test out the bidding, allowing an impulse from partner to more than just disturb their partnership.

Yes, the above is too simple and too risky, but that only applies when following the basic tenets of what should be ironclad partnership agreements.

Hi Bobby, Mircea, Clarksburg,

I once passed after 2C-2D-2S with a dead flat 3-3-3-4 1 count and said “I’ve taken a view here”. An unamused partner told me to get new glasses as he racked up +230, mercifully only at pairs.

The SQ is wasted today but either minor sui J isn’t so North needs to grit his teeth and not pass. He can always blame South for not having quite a good enough rock-crusher or misplaying the hand.

Regards,

Iain

So, what if this pair was playing second negative, or 2H bust? Say responder bids 3C showing a bust. Now what? Is opener strong enough to bid 4H on his own? If not, will responder raise 3H to game?

Hi Mircea,

South now bids 3D and can take a view if partner bids 3H e.g. North could have Jxxx xx xxx 10xxx. Passing at pairs is a.n option despite my disaster (back in the late 70s).

Regards,

Iain
