Hi Everyone,

Since this hand included doxes (specifically a pair of them) and their color was no doubt red, it became likely that the bridge problem revolved around the red suits. Unfortunately West fell victim to discard from his short suit instead of his long, allowing the enemy to pluck three from the heart tricks which and of course, became the fulfilling one.

Thus, perhaps the lesson for today should be, when holding 4 of one suit and 2 of another,
always the odds become 2 to 1 to discard from the 4 card holding, not the 2.

And perhaps bridge being the mystery game that it is, that sage advice may not work, despite it coming from what might thought to be sage authority. Perhaps he should just stick to improving the stage for his sage.

Hi Bobby,

It is a good and worthwhile lesson provided partner is alert enough to ask themself the obvious question (why no echo, why play the cards including the equal value ones upwards) or you’ve discussed it as part of preparation / homework. At the table, though, it is all too easy only to spot the inference at the end.

Regards,

Iain
