I don’t understand the purpose of the heart play off the dummy. Assuming west has a 6-card suit (a reasonable one, given the bidding), he has at least one suit no longer than a doubleton. If it’s hearts, and he has three diamonds all the heart lead does is encourage a promotion. Win the Spade Ace, cash the DA, then another spade with a ruff to return to hand eventually is how I would play it. What am I missing?

Hi Bob (and Bobby),

Seems sound to me although the defence might still be on the ball if H are 4-2 and there is always the loser-on-loser ploy ditching a club if they find a H ruff. On BWTA, the 7th diamond would do it for me over 2H although I accept that reverting to 2S would help. TOCM would find partner with 5-5-0-3 or 6-5-0-2 if Jim2 bid 3D of course.

Trickier with 2-2-6-3 or even 2-3-6-2 after 1S-1N-2H especially with decent diamonds.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Even Jim2 would be protected against partner being void in diamonds when and if partner passed on his 2nd round bidding opportunity, since it would be hard to construct a hand that would, bur perhaps so with 4-6-0-3.
