Hi Bobby,
You say East will succumb to a squeeze (in the pointed suits) but if East casually chucks his small spades declarer still has a guess as to whether to drop the SK or take the finesse although he’ll clearly check the D position first. Of course if East agonises on his last discard or can’t bear to cope with declarer having CA10 alone (West must encourage on the club) then declarer is almost certainly getting this right.
Regards,
Iain
There’s also a hedgehog squeeze. East can theoretically toss clubs, but that means west must guard them, as well as the third spade. What does he throw on the third diamond?
Bob
Hi Iain,
Many icky ethical subjects may accompany the defense on this hand. They will center around what you allude to, the guessing of the eventual singleton spade king.
An experienced player will probably bare his spade king without rancor, but what might throw a spanner with declarer guessing correctly, might me East’s quiet, during the bidding. This leads me to strongly consider an unusual 2NT (for the minors) while holding one too few in each, but still wanting to compete (being NV vs. V and, at least to me, having enough on the side for justification). East pays his money, but does have a case to stick his neck out.
distributional lie.
Hi Bob,
Wet should then throw a spade in a normal tempo. so as not to be condemned for pretending to be throwing away from the king. Sadly, this specific hand is often a subject
of an ethical protest since all avenues (guarding the club ten) lead to discarding spades and not holding the king, might allow NS to win an ethical protest if the actions at the table were
indeed deemed unjustified.
Is an ethical squeeze a previously undocumented one?
Bob
Hi Bob,
No doubt an ethical squeeze might be, in addition to a previously undocumented one,
might also mean, a romantic one, between lovers
But since both squeezes and ethics as applied to the game bridge, have significantly different definitions, perhaps known solely by, shall we say, somewhat sophisticated bridge participants. Finally, “yes, definitely” bridge ethics can very well be present during the
play of a hand which involved a squeeze and by any one of the three active players.
Hi Bob, Bobby,
I think Clyde Love (Bridge Squeezes complete) used the term compound squeeze but hedgehog is so much more fun!
Iain
Hi Iain and others,
Certainly we have hit upon a procedure of naming coups or otherwise worthwhile gambits with the intent of becoming famous, not necessarily for scintillating play, but rather for better and livelier identification. And with this site’s cast of characters I think it appropriate any time a “special” play is unearthed which could provide a lasting name for it.
Yes, a challenge to all who are interested and, of course, first come, first served! For experience think of Jim2’s TOCM (theory of card migration) which, at least to me will
make Jim2’s malady immortal (sad though it may be).
