Hi Dear Mr Wolff
While thematically it is instructive to win the lead and return low club , perhaps defense prevails even if east ducks the lead because declarer started with only two diamonds. South wins and leads J of diamonds which east ducks, wins next diamond and carefully leads nine of hearts and now declarer doesn’t have any play. True, declarer could have third diamond and if so ,
there is no chance. So, it is a typical case of heads we win and tails we break even as as long as east rises on lead, contract always goes down and if he ducks, he needs south to hold a maximum doubleton diamond. And of course the hand would appeal most if east were to hold doubleton diamond. Mrs. Guggenheim would duck the lead and present the contract while whoever plays A and shifts to low club would take the contract down

The Rueful Rabbit would defend this hand properly when a choking fit induced by his snack caused the SA and C4 to fall out of his hand

AVRR –

Declarer could play three rounds of hearts before attacking diamonds.

Hi AVRR, Jim2,

South after the S is ducked should run the DJ but, if ducked – even from Kx, then cash 3 rounds of hearts before repeating the D finesse. Mind you, East might turn up with 5H and West holds both black aces (say AJ10x xx xx Axxxx) – that’d take some explaining to teammates.

Iain

Hi Folks,

With regards to today’s quote, see the following from “A Fish called Wanda” (John Cleese to Jamie Lee Curtis):

Archie: You make me feel free!
Wanda: Free?
Archie: Wanda, do you have any idea what it’s like being English? Being so correct all the time, being so stifled by this dread of, of doing the wrong thing, of saying to someone, ‘Are you married?’ and hearing, ‘ My wife left me this morning,’ or saying, uh, ‘ Do you have children?’ and being told they all burned to death on Wednesday. You see, Wanda, we’re all terrified of embarrassment. That’s why we’re so… dead. Most of my friends are dead, you know; we’ve these piles of corpses to dinner. But you’re alive, God bless you, and I want to be, I’m so fed up with all this. I want to make love with you, Wanda. I’m a good lover – at least, used to be, back in the early 14th century. Can we go to bed?

Just for the record, my mum was English and my Dad Scots so that’s an extra can of worms if you want to take a tin opener to it.

Regards,

Iain

Hi AVRR, Bob, Jim2, & Iain,

It turned out that South held, s. Q754, h. AKQ10, d. 5, c. 7652 and later
was heard to say, “I do enjoy playing against those so-called experts, since
it often allows me to both be unpredictable and, of course, also overbid, and
still be successful.”

Hi Iain,

And what’s more. I don’t understand your English speak about protocol when all you have to
do is offer her a choice between either two partnerships, one at the bridge table and one in bed, or neither. However, like me all talk, but no results, especially in the early 14th century,
a few days before I was born, at least it seems like it. Sometimes I Wanda!

It later occurs to me that Walter the Walrus would also break this hand, relying on “Third hand high” and “Lead fourth from your longest and strongest at No Trump.”

Hi Bobby,

What about both?

Hi Bob,

Like it!

Iain

Hi Iain,

Both were one of the options, but so was neither. However, in actuality, since nothing lasts forever, we will try to succeed, but sooner rather than later we might have to cross one of them off our list, but which one to continue, only “The Shadow” knows.
