Hi Bobby,

For once those who signal length regardless of whether it helps partner or declarer, do well as West today as they automatically play the H8 or 7 (or even 9). Just as long as they’re not playing reverse length signals of course ….

Iain

HI again,

This is probably picky (as usual) but suppose the H finesse works (as here) as does a 2nd heart finesse but nothing clear cut happens. Shouldn’t declarer now duck a club to preserve his options of a 3-3 red suit break or a red suit squeeze if East holds 4-4 in the reds? Without that duck, the squeeze won’t work I fear. After the club has lost and (say) East returns the HK pinning the HJ and exposing a 4-2 break with him holding 4, now cashing the black suit winners will hopefully squash East.

TBF there is a limit on how much you can write in the column.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Yes, there is a word or more accurately described, as a space limit, on the column, but
not here on our web site, allowing knowledgeable experts to strut their stuff.

It might interrupt someone’s concentration to also bring up squeeze possibilities involving
a defender with 5 clubs who also has 4 diamonds, enabling the same type of squeeze, but never then giving up the soft club trick early.

Perhaps the more valuable contribution might seem to be is that if our hero winds up defending as East or West and has been dealt 5 clubs, do not, under a death penalty,
choose to, as a first discard, a small club, unless dealt some overall holding (no other possible defensive threat) requiring such.

If someone immediately recognizes why, he should either receive a worthwhile gift or at least something that indicates that he has earned the right to be described, as knowledgeable.

Should we become song writers and emphasize to music, “Let the punishment fit the crime”?
