Hi Dear Mr Wolff
But perhaps, from the lead of club A and spade shift, it is almost a certainty that east holds A of hearts as with that card too, probably west might have started with a spade And if so, south needs only one club trick. So after winning Q of spades, lead club to J in hand. West might win but his spade continuation would be futile as south can duck and win the continuation and switches to K of heart and is assured of nine tricks via two spades, two hearts, four diamonds and a club. And there would be no problem even if west ducks club J. South switches to K of hearts and gets nine tricks

Hi Bobby, AVRR,

If South ditches the C9 at T1, West may think he’s stuck gold and place East with C7654 from which he might well play the C6. Whether he leads a small club now or the CA, then a line from the end of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner applies – “A sadder and a wiser man he rose the morrow morn”.

Regards,

Iain
