Bobby mentions playing the H5 on the opening lead. I consider that an error. While it is true enough that proper signaling by the defense will lead to the correct club shift, declarer should take the opportunity to try to confuse the opponents by playing the 8. It makes no difference to him which card he plays, and it may cause the opponents to waste some of their mental reserves on wondering why. No opportunity should be lost to bedevil the opponents!

Hi Bob,

You’ve confused me here. OK, the H5 is just a typo but what are you suggesting declarer plays from dummy and his own hand in diamonds at T1? Was it the Ace expecting to take a diamond finesse later?

I quite agree with your last sentence though, especially in a To4 match.

Regards (if slightly confused),

Iain

Hi Bob & Iain,

Emphasis should become the subject when the purpose for today’s hand becomes evident.

Oft times a player (usually a defender since the dummy is always mute, leaving both defenders), instead of only one, as a possibility. The above is only a shortcut to disagree about the difference between the five and the eight of diamonds. if allowed, instead of playing the five of diamonds, I would prefer to say instead when following suit in diamonds to say “lowest one”, instead of choosing the five, but the rules of our beloved game would prevent that. If I didn’t know that you were and are a winner at bridge, I possibly might
think that you Bob, were trying to punish your partner into a mistake, rather than go “balls out for a primary victory”, if I may be raucous, instead of petite.

IOW, “Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead” if, for no other reason, than to get ready for a
partnership victory, rather than a confused “please figure it out, I’ll only give you half a loaf”

Hi Bob,

Let’s pretend that South was dealt the Q109x of diamonds and you were West. At least to me and I was watching the play on view graph, I would predict a disaster about to happen with a heart switch by West, about to occur.

Yes, if you were East and hated your partner, that strange game you have decided to play
might not only end your partnership, but also wind up with you acquiring a couple of black eyes, decorated by West, your now former ex-partner. Iain called it confused, but alas he might have been in his friendliest mood.

If pulling our leg is your game, and I think the percentage real reason, then I (we) apologize.
