Hi Bobby,
With declarer playing diamonds from the top, instead of leading up to them, EW can be pretty sure that declarer has the DJ and there will always be an entry in dummy to them. So shouldn’t West’s first card be suit preference here? After all, South might have DJxx and be playing like this.
If the opening lead situation were less clear cut (e.g. dummy had SQx and West had led the J which might be J109 or AJ10) then a Smith Peter might be an idea too – although I believe Dorothy Hayden may have beaten him to it with the idea.
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
While discussing hands like this one at bridge could be thought akin to discussing, within the USA, who was the better baseball player, Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth, the homage we specifically pay it, does light the way to realize the brilliance sometimes necessary to separate the bears from the goats. Yes, the dreamy atmosphere of such ramblings can be a private matter between two possible animals, both wishing to be one who hibernates, but does not
just bellow, when spoken to. However, if one is thinking, “YES” he (or she) would unblock the nine of clubs if defending, we will do well enough to not interrupt those glorious thoughts
and side with him or her, just to make his day (or would it be at least a month or likely even
a career?).
Thus, so much for our beloved game not providing goals to be reached and discussed, rather than just competing for an overtrick, while playing rubber bridge.
Hi again Iain,
Apologies from me for not responding to your specific question, but for “little me” to even attempt to volunteer an answer about the possibility of first card priorities with suit preference signals, rather than just playing the closest card to one’s thumb, does present
some believable escapes which sadly only cloud the mind, instead of rising above those who are now attempting and likely will continue for several lifetimes, to settle for some relatively small doses of progress whether or not star gazing or our game of bridge is the main subject.
Perhaps if bridge eventually allows players to discuss, rather than just bid, while during the auction and/or early play period, specific targets, then perhaps the answer to your question
can and will be given a proper handling.
Please excuse my complication, but one thing for sure: it has the best chance for me not to be branded as overstepping my call to duty. Thanks in advance for your kind
forgiveness.
Hi Bobby,
Thanks for that and no worries at all. One case where suit preference would apply, I presume, would be where the opponents have a big fit with plenty of trumps in both hand and dummy has a singleton in the suit led. In other cases we may have to improvise while always avoiding giving UI.
Regards,
Iain
