Yes, right, sure and everything affirmative with your analysis of the heart lead being successful.
Making matters even clearer, even a cheating EW pair might not do better, since East might not prefer a heart lead rather than to his diamond ace. Finally, yes East did legally indicate heart length, but not necessarily strength and fate did deal West the KQJ of an unbid suit.
Perhaps lady luck, rather than treachery, helped produce the unlucky result of a diamond lead, but since this was a real hand, there is little surprise in the choice of a diamond for an original choice.
However, and from our standpoint, it gave us and other readers an insight into how important that opening lead can be, which, in turn, needs to alert us, just how necessary it sometimes is.
I’ve said before that a brilliant English bridge author named Brown in the late 1930’s once wrote in his classic book, “Winning Defense”, that a very average bridge player would win every World Bridge Championship, if his partnership always got off to the most effective opening lead and my guess is that most true bridge experts, the world over, would agree.
Thanks for pointing that out, since I suspect that about 80 years later, he would feel good about what you just emphasized.
And do not worry about omitting regards, since, while you always are thoughful, I, and sometimes a few others, are perhaps too callous to observe proper writing etiquette.
But, if only my (and others) thoughts were known, I truly love you and all the others who post here and only choose to discuss bridge, but still feel the respect and good will, for all of my forever, dear friends.
