I may be backseat driving here, but it really seems like East should have gotten this one right. South promised at least 5-5 in the majors and has played three red cards so exactly 5-5. That means East knows his partner started with exactly three clubs and four spades. He doesn’t know partner holds the QS, but if he doesn’t the hand is over anyway.
I know, I know. It is always easier from the sidelines.

That should say “…promised at least 5-5 in the black suits…”, brain stopped, fingers said ‘we got this!’. They did not.
