Hi Bobby,
Your comment at the end of your reply to “Upper Echelon”s question says it all I suspect. Talent and application are vital but a dodgy temperament can easily undo them. I was told via a third party that Ray Brock, who played many times for England and Great Britain, thought that was the reason I hadn’t gone much further in the days up to early 1986 when I played plenty of tournament bridge. Ouch!
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
Sure, a dodgy temperament would, or at least could, be a substantial reason for mediocre success, but possibly only with an unwilling partner to adjust. The perfect temperament is very difficult to both define and even more so, to acquire.
My guess is that the best chance to be a winner is to keep an open mind, do not forget conventions, be consistent with every changing partner, and mind your side of the table and let your partner mind his.
