At the second table, surely leading the CK for a look makes far more sense. The spade lead is unlikely to be right as why are the oppo in 5D with 9 spades between them? Mind you leads are always easy in hindsight.

Hi Iain,
While I certainly agree with your opinion as well as instead leading the ace or king to which is your partnership’s normal choice, simply because of often trying to “baby” one’s partner will somehow backfire more than expected.
Therefore, going out on a “limb’ in an attempt at brilliance by leading a spade, although maybe not thought to be, is playing a most dangerous game with partner, to which the ending of that specific partnership, at least IMO, ranks significantly higher as a result than is the hoped for best chance at a set.
However some “takes their chance and pays their money” in order to suit their individual taste,although “bitter”, at least to me, is the morning line favorite.
