Another hand overbid and underplayed.
South has the poorest shape for his overcall, and while his controls are nice, this does not make this hand a maximum. His correct call over North’s double is either to pass (a trump lead or high Heart and trump switch holds east to 7 tricks) or 3 Hearts.

Hi Robert,
Fair comments but South did pass over East’s 3C bid when his partner has shown a good raise in H or an alternative strong hand. Given that, his hand could be quite a bid worse, at least if his style is to dredge up the sort of putrid overcalls I make. NS have a combined 28 count here although East’s bidding should maybe sound a warning bell.
I might have bid 3D rather than 4H though, showing some doubt. After all, with 3H partner is just raising rather than making that second double.
Regards,
Iain
Hi Robert & Iain,
IMO, both of you contributed common bridge sense to your posts. Then, combined with the column rhetoric, the three of you, added everything necessary to come to an accurate conclusion.
Only proving that in actuality the result is what is left, and that piece of information far outweighs the mood of the moment with meaning.
Leaving us with basically the thought of, although it is often a good to great feeling to bid and make a difficult hand, the learning experience during, is the fuel to becoming a better player, but only with careful thought after, about why one succeeded and more importantly, how to keep that lovely finish going.
