Maybe East should play the QD hoping to inspire West. With my luck, however, I am sure West would misread it and underlead to “my JD.”
Hi Jim2, West may get it right as most play a pre-empt to have a void or singleton somewhere.Looking at West’s spade holding and dummy’s,he has a 50% chance…of finding the spade play. If West switches to a low D I would ‘try’ to remember what Iain said the other day about…cheers
Hi Jim2,
No doubt if West would have made that “opponent gladdening play” of under leading his ace of diamonds” to which your TOCM elf would whisper to you, “Jim2, you and partner are manipulating our sabotage contract with you by doing it to yourself”. Yes, both East and West want East in to lead a spade and, of course, East was not dealt one. As they might say in China. “Two Wongs don’t make either a right, but rather say, “good night”. or something including phonetics, but in this case, not able to occur by rote or note.
Hi Patrick,
Instead of hearing what Iain would have said, we would need to be visiting his final resting spot for first playing his diamond queen, while only having his spade void to lead. Someone once tried that once, and his partner did have the jack, but to this very moment has not led.
A watching kibitzer has said there were two good reasons for that happening, but neither were voiced.
Hi Bobby,
Maybe East should, less dramatically, play the 9D on the first round to encourage a second diamond. And then on the second diamond (with great drama, of course!) produce the QD. That cannot possibly be from an opening doubleton so West should read it as demanding a spade lead, I would think.
It does not seem to risk anything as even if South, improbably, started with Jxx as a third diamond would not stand up anyway and there is no obviously useful discard on the board. Then take your ruff, lead back your other trump and let declarer struggle on from there.
