Hi Bobby,

I’ve often suggested that weak 4-4 major fits can be overrated (e.g conmsider 3N vs 4D holding Jxxx AQx Kxx Qxx as dummy opposite Qxxx Kx QJ10x AKx in hand) but a 5-5 solid major suit fit is a different matter. Still it is a trick less as Peter Mendelson (I think) pointed out that with AKQJ109x Kx Ax Ax after 2C 2D there is a case for just rebidding 3N not 2S.

If West were 0544 though then surely E-W would unravel the diamonds to let East cash the 5th one which squeezes South before West. West is unlikely to lead a small D at T1 from AQJ2.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Such finality, but justified, since, even without the spade 9, (substituting the 8), it probably is still worth the risk. However, a wonderful hand to set up for a freakness lad who finally takes the risk and finds both 4 spades and 4 hearts cold but down 1 in 3NT, which could easily be contrived.
