Hi Bobby, Folks,
Just a slight digression from last night. You are 3rd in hand playing pairs at Game All with AKxxx J AQJ10xx Q opposite me. To your concern, I have a short think and you grimace inwardly at the though that I’m about to pre-empt in a round suit. Instead I come up with one of the least likely (but just about plausible) bids imaginable, and not 1 of a pointed suit either. Ideas?
regards,
Iain

Hi Iain,
Totally, I am with Jim2’s imagination. and rather than risk a partnership miss understanding
you took the safety bid of 7NT. Fourth seat, holding the ace of hearts, doubles, and everyone passes (instead of redoubling). Caught by partner’s opening who held s.QJ, h.KQx, d.Kx, c. AKJ10xx.
Please, never divulge whether a heart was led!
Hi Bobby,
Partner opens an Acol 4N asking for specific Aces to be bid with 6C = CA, 5D/H/S those aces and 5C n ace. 5N shows 2 so that’s what he bid. My rather pushy bid was based on x AKQ108xxx None AKJx (CAKQx would be sounder) but 5N got 7H which he should really convert to 7N as he hasn’t got a void so I will always be able to get back to my hearts. As he said just before dummy went down, “I still reckon I’ve got a better hand than you”. I’m sure there are saner ways to get there but not necessarily more enjoyable. It also stops the oppo bidding spades below the 5 level and cheered up the pair who’d found a rather pricy save in 6C going for 2000. LH is 6250 whereas RHO is 1228 shape. It partly atoned for my “save” of minus 800 against a probably making 6H earlier in the evening at Adverse vulnerability. Sadly the oppo took a punt (1H, 2H Michaels overcall, 6H) which proved very effective. There was n lack of action last night, although a fair amount of iffy judgement at times.
Regards,
Iain
PS A heart (6) was led against 7H RHO following so I could and should have overtaken, drawn trumps and claimed. I carefully ruffed a diamond high before drawing trumps instead but imagine I’d decided to overtake the CQ at T2 to get back to hand (I’ve got tricks to burn after all) and walked into an 8-0 break and a ruff.
