Hi Bobby,

If East had SKJxx, he will naturally see South is home with the SA and DK, the latter being known. So, is there a case for leading SK then a small one or should South reason that East, with SAK, would have tried a small spade as here?

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

At least to me, the answer to your critical answer (reason being that the victor in this theoretical mind battle will gain more than just this hand for the immediate future with this specific person match-up) is to use the past (if at all possible) to mentally predict what psychology to offer up. The small one from AKx, in the absence of other information would, at least to me, be the normal deception usually used, since, believe it or not, even deception has its parameters.

The only other advice I might offer is that, if you East, passed in tempo at your first bid, then leading low from AKx has another bullet to offer, especially to a thorough thinking opponent. Good luck and thank heaven when and if these tricky psychological battles do not appear often, that as fun as the glee may be for the winner, no one, at least to my knowledge wins every one, except only those who obfuscate losing, as a matter of habit.
