Hi Bobby, Barry & Folks,
Happy New Year! What was North thinking though – pass 3N and blame partner if it is wrong. Second choice bid 3S over 3C and pass South’s 3N bid. The defence may also be leary of leading away from (say) KJxx in H vs 3N even if partner has HQx or Q10x. Just as well South didn’t have SAx or even A alone, though, especially given the extra trump entry available.
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
And happy New Year right back at you.
With today’s hand all that it seems to me is that North could be and likely is very bright, (taking up bridge is evidence), but has very little experience in winging contracts when no sure thing becomes evident.
In those situations, and IMO they are frequent, but do not come labeled, therein, causing otherwise wise people to just not understand, the pros and cons of successful bridge thinking, and, at that moment in time, thought his partner’s bid of 3NT, would never be a gambling type, and furthermore he and his partner will ccontinue to play bridge
with the idea that every bid, taken by an expert player, is a perfect description of the 13 cards he is looking at. However, and maybe not immediately after experiencing this, if his partner is wise, he will discuss these type actions and although, not immediately endearing himself, he will be on the right road to allowing his then partner to figure out what all the commotion is about.
No more, but possibly no less, is needed
