Hi Barry,

I may be missing something, but I presume that the missing bid is 3NT, so what do you mean by “Do not bid his cards for him”?

I am not our new Host, but I think the text meant for SOUTH not to bid PAST 3N.

If North then thinks slam is possible facing a balanced hand, it would be up to NORTH to bid past 3N, not South.

Thanks.

Hi Steve & Jim2,

Yes, Jim2 has likely aced your question, by naming the now North to issue, at that point,
the possibility of slam.

Very Old Host

Hi Emeritus and Jim,

Nothing I have about Baze includes opener’s bid of 4NT, as shown in the column. Can either of you give me a reference I can consult to learn more about opener’s bids? If so, THANKS.

Steve Conrad –

I am sure there are a full table of sequences given in some search result, but I did not find them all either with my first couple tries, just some examples. Instead, they stressed the value of intermediate bids like 4D as artificial.

However, using 4C to confirm the notrump bidder’s major as trump means that 4N can no longer be quantitative (since notrump is no longer being considered as a final contract). This allows 4N to be Roman Key Card with the trump king becoming a key card while also allowing a trump queen ask.

BTW, I use a variation of that principle with casual pick-up partners. In my case, I state that Gerber is OFF in any notrump opener auction once any suit is bid naturally. Thus, 2/3D responses and transfer responses allow Gerber, but the notrump bidder answering a Stayman bid with a 4-card major takes Gerber off the table, freeing up 4C to be something else, like a cue bid or natural.

Note that today’s column explores this method some more.
