Bernard is well known as a teacher but clearly not a bad player either. I must admit I don’t like the JH lead though and would have e tried a spade which gets taken by East and a trump is then returned. Small D to the A and a diamond back sees West win as East discards and exit with the HJ now works nicely.

Good idea. The diamonds are just too weak to play for one loser if no ruffs are involved so, yes, the JH lead looks like it lets the contract through (unless East led the trump back and South guessed wrong).
Of course, Mrs G would wonder what all the fuss was about after the JH lead. “Cross to the AD and finesse a trump, why do you people always make this so complicated?”
