There is a seemingly simpler reasoning path to the column line.
If West held the KD along with the known club AK, then having also the KS would would bring West to 13 points despite having passed over 1S.
Thus, if playing low from Dummy turns out to be the wrong guess, then the KS is highly likely to be onside.
