Hi Bobby,

The freak hand reminded me of one in the late 70s when (at adverse).I held A AKQJxxx AKQx x. RHO opened 1D and I bid 4N when LHO bid 5S. Pard doubled showing 0 aces, rho bid 6C and I settled for 6H . LHO saved in 6S, got the trumps wrong and only made 9 tricks. 4H is going off on best defence! LHO has KJ109 to 10 spades, 2 H and 1C. RHO is 0166 so a spade lead is ruffed as is a D back then a C to the A sees another D ruff before I’ve had a sniff.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

With the defense used to defeat four hearts would you judge the player who held the giant heart hand only jumping to three hearts over his RHO’s one diamond opening to be a sound bidder?

Hi Bobby,

Probably not unless he’d seen the hand records and was a complete Newbie. There again the defence still have to get it right. Imagine being in 6H though, which RHO doubles for a spade lead and gets it then the defence goes as described – 3 off!
