Hi Bobby,

If trumps had been 2-2 but East had held better spades (maybe even Q9xxx) I imagine he would have cursed West’s opening lead. On yesterday’s play hand though what would you have led as nothing appeals really. Also, was the slam enough to swing matters in the end?

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

A diamond, of course, as any fool is bound to say, but in reality, methinks both leading against what figures to be a close game or slam, aggression, rather than conservatism, should suggest what will then become realistic.

Perhaps dying with boots on, rather than not, appeals to many, but I join other’s belief in that, especially when playing against excellent opposition. Why be subjected to an opponent’s brilliant declarer play, when you can give it away on the opening lead and thus not have to then congratulate him?

Only kidding, of course, but I do think a diamond rather than a worthless doubleton
will work out better in the long run and that is exactly what a career in playing bridge represents, a very long run, especially when not cheating, otherwise when so doing, the game becomes a walk in the park, or hopefullu instead, a definite LIFETIME ban forever and a day or more!

To not do so, especially with good enough players, is the height of stupidity, for more reasons than ever vocalized! Simply put “Let the punishment FIT the crime”!
I’m tired of talking to trees, since they don’t listen to me.

Hi Bobby,

Many thanks for that. I must say I’d have tried a diamond at teams but probably a trump at pairs. I’ll see if EB can run a simulation on which is better.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Dear Mr Wolff
Very well optimistic/ desperate bid for a much needed swing and equally well played hand taking the only chance. Certainly south must have hugged his partner for providing that all important ten of spades
