Hi Bobby,

Should East double to compete here instead of selling out to 2H? Maybe unwise at the vulnerability and with HKx looking like it is under the cosh but at pairs or if NV maybe worth a try. Alternatively, perhaps 2S under these conditions.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

No, I definitely do not think that East should double (back in) when faced with that collection of mostly trash, when the auction returns to him. but instead, mind today’s suggestion of responding 1NT (a clearer overall choice) rather than a somewhat pathetic 1 diamond, which has more than one way (and did) of sinking the bridge ship (inducing partner’s opening lead).

Yes, a likely bidding error (if indeed, all consider it one), which tends to sometimes be thought less than what our lead-in comment would consider the far less perfect nature of the simple 1NT which in turn, at least IMO will cover more bases. Small error, but monstrously a very poor result. especially at match points.

And finally, yes, we are the culprits who selected one diamond (instead of
1NT) not any other no named player, only proving that the learning in bridge
actually exists in only just exposing one’s mind to the game itself, by simply
just playing it.

Hi Bobby,

Many thanks for that and a good point here – 1D pussyfoots, it is hardly lead directional (look what happened) relative to DAJ10xx or similar, East hasn’t got a 4 card major with which he could raise West’s possible rebid and it has no pre-emptive value. APART from that…..

Mind you I know players where if I bid 2S as E on that rubbish, NS would take the push.

regards,

Iain
