If West had (say) K9x J109xx xx QJx and declarer ran the diamonds he might be worried that South had (say) CAKxx or even AK10x with weaker spades, top end rather than a 15 count and let a spade and a heart go. Then leading the SJ gives a valid play for the contract. Not today, though.
