Suppose East ducks the D9! Of course the hand is now a trivial make by playing DA then DQ but South may play a heart to the K and then a D to the 8, even though West would surely have led a D from K10xxx at T1. East pounces this time with the 10 and plays the S9, so declarer suffers a similar fate to what happened at the table.
No, I doubt if anyone would find that at the table either.
