On the subject of smother plays, I played with a mutual friend of Barry’s and myself (Steve Green) at University and afterwards. In the Brighton Summer congress in 1978, Steve managed a smother play on my trump holding when he’d got thrown in (and could have exited safely with a trump, but tried for a trump promotion – not unreasonably tbf). Fortunately the contract had already crashed a few off (good earlier defence plus they were too high – probably a near top anyway) but that was the only time I’ve seen such an occurrence at the table.
Just got back in touch with Steve after many, many years which was good.
