I doubt I would bid 3N. 5D makes if East takes the top hearts or if declarer chooses the right black suit. I think there are enough spades missing for non-jim2 declarers to get it right.

HI Bobby,

Interesting permutations here, but surely West can’t have SAQ10x plus the HJ and give South any sort of opening one bid. Mind you, it is very good news if he has or tbf if West has A108xx. The situation in spades needn’t frighten West here, though – if South has SAQ9 then the contract isn’t going off while the play to T1 suggests East hasn’t got AK109x.

Iain

Hi Jim2 & Iain,

Yes both contracts are worth playing with 5 diamonds always cold with the right black
suit duck. Truthfully, when assessing blame, it becomes not totally fair to choose the one which justifiably makes, while ignoring the specific plays necessary. However, the whole
process of allowing the winner to explain, is somehow based only with results, instead
of a possibly fairer way to determine what constitutes success.

In any event, perhaps let the stronger voice drown out the other as a secondary way to
choose. In these current days of physical politics it seems all nations will eventually succumb
to that anyway, so perhaps only bridge will and should, no doubt, remain pure
