Very nifty! It looks so simple on the surface, but with a little thought, it turns out that there is an extra chance and it costs South exactly nothing to try. One of the purest examples of this theme that I have ever seen.

These hands at the margins are what separate players of different skills. Hands that everyone can make (move the AC to the other side of the table) or no one can make (break hearts 4-2) tell us nothing, but hands like this one add up over time and make all the difference.

Thanks for your favorable comment on today’s hand.

Most of us learned bridge and its highways and byways in different phases. But to become at least competent with holding one’s own against superior competition, there is likely no alternative but to take on players, both more experienced than you and very well versed on what it takes to be consistently formidable. IOW, one must play against the best he or she can find or otherwise learn to bear the ignominy of mediocrity.
