Hi Bobby,

A question from last night. At Game All, pairs, RHO (me) opens a weak 2S and you hold 10 Axx AQ8xxx Qxx. Pass seems too cautious so do you prefer 3D or X?

Regards,

Iain

Iain Climie –

I am not Our Host, but I hope you do not mind me interjecting anyway.

I can sympathize with X, but I would bid 3D. If I do not hold four hearts, I would want three better ones than Axx. Sure, the spade singleton and the AH preventing enemies preventing ruffs are both significant positives in a heart contract, but I do not judge them enough to make up for the lack of HCPs, etc. Even KQx of clubs might change my mind.

Granted any bid is a compromise here, I would rather it be my less-than-robust diamond suit where at least I have a 6th card.

Hi Jim2,

Yes, I prefer to bid and, if asked, would show a decided preference for 3 diamonds, rather than double. To be more specific and assuming my partner was experienced, the sixth diamond and the absence of the 4th heart, takes all my doubling, incentive away, making it a toss-up to bid at all, if and when, of instead doubling, was understood by others, to somehow fill the bill.

Hi Bobby, Jim2,

For once I had a decent weak 2 i,e, KQ87xx 9xx x Axx. LHO decided to double, partner unhappily passed waiting for further action with None QJ10x J10xx KJ10xx and the next hand with SAJ9xxx HKxx DK9 C9x was happy to pass. Poor partner didn’t even get the chance to SOS redouble and I lurched 2 off for -500. 3N clearly shouldn’t make as long as the defence play clubs reasonably briskly so ouch. I agree that 3D seems a better bid but there you go.

Regards,

Iain

If the Black Swan was a face card, you were dealt one on that hand.

(I see them all the time, of course, but others accuse me of hallucinating, so there!)

Hi Jim2,

Thanks for that although there is a cheering side to Black Swans in the UK. Many pubs are called that and they are universally nicknamed “The Mucky Dick”
