I think North overbid his hand when he doubled, cue-bid, and then raised to game. However, I disagree with Bobby’s assertion that you need very little to respond. If all he needs is this, then North needs to respect his bid of 3 Spades and pass. The fact that 4 Spades can be made is irrelevant.

Hi Bobby, South has QJxxx and singleton D,was he right to bid 3S over 3D*,I would say 3pts and one pt for 5th spade and 3 pts for singleton D=7pts… could he bid 4S over 3D* ? Looking at both N/S hands-9loser South and 5 loser North =14 losers therefore 4S rates to have a chance..according to the law of TT..I stand to be corrected…cheers Patrick
Like to hear Jim2 and Iain’s assessment of South’s hand too 🙂
Certainly a case can be made for 4S based on North’s cuebid, assuming it showed spade support and substantial extra values.
With that typed, however, South can very reasonably interpret North’s cue as an invitation, essentially asking if South has anything extra beyond that 1S free bid. IMHO, South has little or zero extra. If anything, East’s 1H bid over the double hints at values lurking behind the North hearts holding promised by the original Double.
I think I would take the same view as that of the original South. That is, if 4S is to be the contract, it must be bid by North.
Hi Jim2, Always good to hear your thoughts on the subject matter…:)
🙂
Flattered to be asked.
Hi Patrick,
I’m with Jim2 on this as well I must say. I think the original 1S bid is sensible enough but I’ve hardly got extras for the bid, despite the stiff diamond although that might tempt me. With Dxx I’m definitely staying low.
Sorry for the delay – I’ve just started a new job this week. so a bit chaotic
Regards,
Iain

Hi Iain,Thanks for your ‘double take’ on the matter. Cheers Patrick 😀
