Hi Bobby,

If West exits with a club giving a ruff and discard isn’t declarer still going off as the hearts are frozen?

Hi Iain,

Yes indeed, but instead you are not recognizing today’s accurate quote, which would enable West to pass on to his partner, East, the ability to foul up the result, therein well establishing himself as the superior. To do otherwise, in spite of the temptation to only succeed, would (could) be a blow in the wrong direction to claim dominance.

That extremely important aspect is also a good excuse for making the play you suggest,
but only if one is lucky enough to be playing either for money or for hoping to win an important tournament, but unfortunately, as here, West is definitely the Master of Ceremonies.

That’s one approach but partner-proofing has its merits too.
